A Brief History
The Dover Lights Arkansas have appeared in the Ozark hills since the late 1800s, and this phenomenon has kept residents guessing ever since.
These unexplained orbs of light have become somewhat of a local legend, sparking stories and interest throughout the years. While these lights have been viewed by residents for over a century, their origin and exact history of the Dover Lights remain unknown.
What do the Dover Lights look like?
Residents and tourists alike have seen the Dover Lights from an overlook.
They describe these lights as spheres that hover silently in the darkness of the hillside, with the intensity growing and shrinking at random. Some say the lights are extremely small and difficult to see with the naked eye, even in pitch darkness.
Even so, KATV thought the lights were cool enough to do a whole story on and headed out to the overlook to try to capture the lights.
How to get to the Dover Lights?
Located 10 miles north of Russellville off Interstate 40, the remote location and rugged terrain of the Dover Lights make the area surrounding them difficult to explore.
Sometimes, the lights can be seen from a pull-off spot West of Scenic Highway 7 and North of the Long Pool recreation area. Drivers should head up to Maupin Flat Road at night, pull off, and look west down the valley along the creek.
Are the Dover Ghost Lights caused by crystals?
Although it’s a popular theory, the Dover Lights Arkansas are not proven to be caused by crystals.
Some believe that the lights could be the result of natural gasses or reflections from quartz crystals found in the hills of the region. When subject to pressure, these crystals could potentially emit a faint glow or light.

The Elderly Couple: Unable to pay the doctor for his healing services, the couple offered what they had – a dozen rifle bullets. Years later, the doctor decided to polish the bullets and display them in his study. In doing this, he realized the bullets were silver and that more must be somewhere on their property. He made his way back to the elderly couple’s property to find that they had passed away many years before. Believing there was a mine of silver located on their property, the doctor began to dig. He emerged with silver bars and took them back to his home. That night, he mysteriously died. It’s said that if you stand at the overlook and call out, “The silver is here,” 2 lights will appear on the hillside.
Coal Mining Deaths: It’s believed that a coal mine located on the hillside collapsed one day and killed miners. In this legend, the Dover Lights are said to be spectral lights resembling the carbide lanterns carried by the miners.
Ties to Burial Sites: This spot in the valley is also linked to an old Native American burial site, with the lights being attributed to the spirits of the tribal leaders trying to lead their people into the next life.

Youtubers Cryptids Across the Atlas traveled to Dover, Arkansas, to investigate these mysterious glowing lights. They described them as 3 blue lights in the shape of a triangle. In this video, check out what they were able to capture. Another YouTube video, posted by user Chelsey Butterfield, shows the Dover Lights Arkansas lighting up the sky, seemingly at random. She called the experience a once-in-a-lifetime event!
Have the Dover Lights been solved today?
The cause of the Dover Lights has never officially been solved, but there are dozens of theories about what causes them.
In the documentary On the Fringe, Justin Minor worked hard to rule out every possible cause of the lights. The Dover Lights cannot be attributed to electricity, the reflections of stars or the moon, or car headlights, and because it’s been decades, it’s unlikely that campers or pranksters caused the lights.
